peter is an evolved human who can mimic the abilities of others around him. at first, peter could only mimic powers while in proximity to their source, but eventually learned to recall previously mimicked powers with greater and greater ease.peter is the biological brother of nathan petrelli and the son of angela and arthur petrelli. at a young age, arthur sent him away due to unforeseen circumstances and was later adopted by rachel and jeremy grey, a wealthy family that only wanted the best for peter. he went on to become a forensic pathologist after graduating from harvard medical school, but during his residency, peter fell in with a group that triggered darker tendencies.

HISTORY
a year after peter was born, angela awoke from a dream that bred terror like a stephen king novel — a nightmare, a glimpse of her son's dark future. not long thereafter, angela made the difficult decision to take matters into her own hands by taking her son's life. an attempt to save the lives of countless others, thwarted before it was too late by her husband, who had shoved her aside and scooped young peter into his arms. an embrace that should've been warm and kind, and yet, remained cold and calculating. to ensure his son's safety, arthur sent peter away with one goal: to use him as a weapon when his abilities manifested.cunning as ever, arthur intentionally placed peter with an abusive family to further corrupt his abilities... to make himself out to be a hero in his eyes when he would inevitably "save" him. and to keep those secrets, arthur curated a young woman to wipe the memory of peter from angela and nathan's minds.
at the age of thirteen, peter successfully escaped his abusive family and survived on his own for a month before he was caught by child protective services. during his short stay, peter refused to provide a last name for fear of returning to the home he fought tooth and nail to get away from.
peter was later placed in the care of the grey family, where he went on to live a fairly normal life. although, his traumatic history didn't make it easy for the grey's, they were bound and determined to give him a good life. and during high school, peter met his girlfriend and future fiancée. despite his previous troubles, peter proved to be incredibly bright and landed a harvard scholarship. he graduated at the top of his class before going on to join one of the nation's most prestigious pathology programs.
one night, peter was invited into a small group of residents, where it was later revealed that they entertained themselves with a secret after-hours game at the morgue of who can commit the perfect undetectable murder. when peter caught several members of the group in lies, he realized that what initially seemed like vigilante killings were, in reality, innocent people murdered for sport.
oddly enough... this revelation hadn't dissuaded peter. in fact, he discovered that he felt alive while watching the light drain from his victim's eyes. and when his powers manifested, he felt the same energy radiating from the leader of the group, igniting a passion that had consumed them both.
eventually, the leader's girlfriend realized that peter was sleeping with him after every murder they committed together. enraged by her boyfriend's infidelity, she killed him in cold blood before the next game, intent on presenting his body. by this time, peter had devised a plan to put an end to the games and during their next meeting, he had rigged the gas in the room, resulting in a massive explosion that he couldn't escape in time. it was then that he discovered that he had the ability to regenerate when he noticed the burns on his body healing.
for a fleeting moment, peter thought he had won... but quickly found out that one of the group had managed to survive, and sought out revenge on peter's fiancée. the survivor believed to have finally committed the "perfect murder", then confronted him after the completed autopsy report. however, it turned out to be the survivor's undoing. peter subdued the remaining member, and inflicted the same punishment that took the life of his fiancée. and in the process, he performed the first of many vivisections. due to the abuse peter endured throughout his childhood, combined with the profound loss of his fiancée, and his sense of self, peter succumbed to his corruption.
